Rooted in Belonging: How Shift Esperanza Is Creating a Culture of Care in Nosara
In a world that’s moving fast and growing apart, Shift Esperanza offers a different path, one grounded in shared values, local collaboration, and the belief that a thriving community is one where people, land, and culture grow together.
At the heart of Shift is a clear intention: to give more than we take. And that begins by rethinking what development means, especially in a place like Nosara, where the rhythms of the land and the strength of local relationships shape daily life.
A Culture That Embraces Community as Family
Across Latin America, the idea of family is expansive. It often includes friends, neighbors, mentors, and even strangers who become part of your everyday life. It’s a cultural tradition rooted in trust and shared responsibility, what social scientists refer to as “chosen family.” This lived experience informs every decision made at Shift Esperanza.
Rather than building a gated retreat, Shift is creating a place of open connection: where homes are nestled within walking neighborhoods, shared spaces foster interaction, and support systems are woven into the rhythm of life.
A Project That Restores, Not Replaces
From the beginning, Shift has worked to regenerate, not just preserve, the land it inhabits. What began as a degraded cattle pasture is now a productive, biodiverse ecosystem. Through its partnership with Porvenir Design, Shift has planted over 10,000 support trees, 750+ fruit trees, and 5,000 vetiver plants to restore soil health, reduce erosion, and feed the ecosystem, and the community.
At Finca La Esperanza, Shift’s eight-acre organic farm, local team members are employed year-round to grow food, manage agroforestry systems, and teach regenerative practices. The farm doesn't just supply fresh produce, it’s a place for learning, collaboration, and celebration.
And with each passing season, more of the land is brought under stewardship, healing not only soil and water, but the relationship between people and place.
Strengthening Local Ties
Shift Esperanza is deeply embedded in the Nosara region. Many of the team members are long-time residents of nearby towns like Las Delicias and Barco Quebrado, bringing generational knowledge to the stewardship of the land.
Initiatives such as tree planting events with local children, collaborative educational workshops, and shared cultural activities are part of the everyday rhythm of the project. By supporting local jobs, partnering with Costa Rican-led businesses, and emphasizing long-term economic integration, Shift contributes to the community rather than standing apart from it.
This approach fosters something more meaningful than co-existence, it cultivates a sense of mutual care.
Designing for Connection
While the architecture is thoughtful and sustainable, the true design at Shift is in the relationships it makes possible. Walkable trails, communal kitchens, shaded gathering areas, and even a custom-built app allow residents to share childcare, organize community events, and co-create daily life.
As founder Matthew Blesso shared in a recent interview, “We’re not just building houses. We’re creating an environment where connection is the default, not the exception.”
A Shared Vision for a Better Way of Living
Reports from global health experts, including Dr. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General, highlights the health crisis tied to disconnection and isolation. But Shift Esperanza responds with a living, breathing solution: a place where the lines between self, community, and environment are softened. A place where well-being is measured in relationships, not just square footage.
Here, people don’t just coexist, they contribute to something larger than themselves.
