The work at Shift began long before homes. The property has been cared for through tree preservation, native planting, soil restoration, water management, and the careful reintroduction of the layers that make an Equatorial dry forest healthy and diverse.
Existing trees are surveyed and protected. Native and drought tolerant plants are selected for their relationship to the climate, soil, and wildlife. Deep rooted groundcovers support erosion control. Compost and mulch enrich the soil. Wildlife corridors remain connected across the property, giving native species room to move through the landscape.
The restoration is already visible across the land. More than 10,000 trees and plants have been established through the farm system, including shade trees, support species, food producing plants, and habitat planting. More than 5,000 vetiver grass plants help stabilize soil, hold water, create habitat, and protect the slopes.
The Regenerative Farm
A working farm designed to nourish the land and the people who live here.
Finca La Esperanza is an eight acre regenerative farm at the heart of Shift. Its agroforestry systems grow food while rebuilding soil, improving water retention, creating habitat, and expanding biodiversity. Fruit trees, staple crops, support species, composting, and water stewardship work together as one productive landscape.
The farm is designed to grow with the community. By 2033, Finca La Esperanza is projected to produce more than 76,000 kilograms of food each year, supplying up to 30% of the annual caloric needs of approximately 412 people. The planned biofactory will process organic material from up to 400 people, returning nutrients to the soil and completing the cycle from food to compost to the next harvest.

At Shift, infrastructure is designed as part of the land plan. Underground power and high speed fiber keep utilities out of the canopy, preserve open views, and reduce risk for wildlife. Solar and battery systems, passive climate design, and homes oriented for natural airflow support a more efficient relationship with the equatorial environment.
Roads are paved with concrete pavers made from plastic bottles collected from Costa Rican waterways. Their design allows rainwater to drain naturally back into the soil. Exterior lighting follows dark sky principles that preserve the night, protect wildlife, and keep the stars visible above the community. Every system has a practical role in supporting a more resilient and beautiful landscape.

A Circular Water System
Water is held, cared for, and returned to the land.
Water stewardship is woven throughout the masterplan. Rainwater harvesting, contour planting, water retention basins, infiltration ditches, permeable surfaces, and planted slopes help slow, spread, and sink rainfall into the soil. This supports the aquifer, strengthens soil moisture, reduces runoff, and sustains green spaces through the changing seasons.
At the home level, graywater is captured, treated, and reused for non potable needs, reducing demand on well water. Wastewater is treated on site and purified water is repurposed through efficient drip irrigation across surrounding green areas. The result is a water system that supports healthy soil, productive planting, and the wider watershed.
